Analyst Take:
The hybrid cloud market is indeed experiencing significant growth as enterprises make increasingly nuanced decisions about workload placement. This is a really big deal. As enterprises increasingly adopt hybrid cloud infrastructures, the real time integration of mainframe, distributed, and cloud data has become essential for informing AI models and unlocking actionable insights. A key challenge we see is that vast amounts of critical data from core transactional systems remain underutilized for AI and analytics, bulk data export (beyond back-up use cases) to the cloud is not feasible given latency and data security concerns. This is a problem. AI and analytics models that don’t leverage mainframe data are often unable to provide complete and accurate insights, seriously limiting their ability to drive business value. Therefore, comprehensively integrating data across infrastructures is critical to getting a complete and timely view of the business. We are increasingly see mainframe vendors such as BMC, IBM, Broadcom and, now Rocket, acknowledge this dynamic and bring solutions to market to address the specific integrations concerns of the mainframe platform.
What was Announced:
Rocket DataEdge is designed to build diverse enterprise data sets into a single, scalable, high quality enterprise data set. It is architected to be a comprehensive data discovery, integration, and metadata management suite, supporting many hybrid technology connections and targets. The key components include Rocket Data Replicate & Sync, Rocket Data Intelligence, and Rocket Data Virtualization.
Rocket Data Replicate & Sync
Engineered to provide real time, high performance data management that connects mainframe, distributed, and cloud platforms. It aims to streamline modernization efforts, minimizing complexity, delays, errors, and data compatibility problems. It is also designed to automatically capture data changes and replicate them across data stores.
Rocket Data Intelligence
Architected as a self service data intelligence platform built on automation that spans cloud, distributed, and mainframe infrastructures. It aims to manage the complex environments of large organizations. It is designed to provide an intuitive interface with clear visualizations.
Rocket Data Virtualization
Designed to provide real time business insights from mainframe, relational and NoSQL databases, big data platforms, and other enterprise sources. It aims to reduce operational costs while ensuring critical data is up to date and available.
Looking Ahead
Based on what we are observing, Rocket Software is making a smart move by addressing the growing need for hybrid cloud data integration. We expect the data integration space to continue to grow and Rocket is well placed to take advantage. The key trend that we are going to be looking out for is how well DataEdge performs in real world scenarios, particularly in terms of its ability to seamlessly integrate mainframe data with cloud based AI and analytics platforms. Partnerships and a wider ecosystem play with the big hyperscalers will be key to adoption, and this has not been a strong point for mainframe software vendors in the past.
Based on my analysis of the market, my perspective is that many organizations are struggling with this very challenge, so there is a significant opportunity for a solution that delivers on its promises. The key measure for success is whether Rocket can drive widespread adoption of DataEdge - traction with 50-100 customers is expected, what will be the true indicator is whether Rocket can drive widespread adoption beyond the leading edge mainframe shops and out into the customer base
