The News

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of AWS Transform Now, a new service designed to accelerate enterprise migration and modernization projects. Find out more here. This agentic AI powered service aims to simplify and speed up the migration of infrastructure, applications, and code for VMware, mainframe, and .NET environments. AWS Transform provides specialized AI agents to automate complex tasks, offering a chat based interface for user interaction and collaboration across teams.

Analyst Take

For years, the promise of the cloud has been tempered by the often arduous reality of migrating existing workloads. While the benefits of agility, scalability, and cost efficiency are clear, the sheer complexity and time involved in moving mission critical applications have kept a significant portion of enterprise infrastructure on premises. The statistic that 75% of enterprise workloads remain on premises, with a large percentage running on decades old software, underscores the magnitude of this challenge. Traditional migration projects can easily stretch beyond a year, oftentimes a lot longer, creating a bottleneck for organizations eager to embrace the benefits of cloud-native technology.

AWS Transform represents an interesting approach to tackling this persistent problem. By embedding agentic AI directly into the migration process, AWS aims to deliver a step change in both speed and efficiency. The initial claims are quite compelling. The .NET agent, for instance, is architected to modernize Windows based applications to Linux up to four times faster, potentially yielding substantial savings in licensing costs, a significant pain point for many enterprises. Similarly, the mainframe agent is designed to decompose monolithic COBOL applications into cloud ready components in a fraction of the time traditionally required. The VMware agent aims to automate the often intricate process of converting on premises network configurations to AWS equivalents at an impressive rate.

What Was Announced:

AWS Transform incorporates several key components. For .NET modernization, the agent is designed to analyze dependencies, develop customized plans, autonomously transform code, execute tests, and validate Linux readiness. It aims to enhance application performance and scalability by porting to cross platform .NET.

The mainframe agent is architected to process COBOL, JCL, and CICS applications, offering advanced code analysis, dependency identification, and the decomposition of monolithic applications using graph neural networks. It aims to convert legacy code and databases to Java and Postgres while generating technical documentation.

The VMware agent is designed to automate application discovery, dependency mapping, migration planning, network conversion, server migration, and EC2 instance optimization. It uses graph neural networks to analyze network traffic and generate migration wave plans, aiming to significantly reduce the time required for network configuration and planning.

A unified web experience is provided to facilitate collaboration and track progress across all these migration scenarios.

The integration of a chat interface across all agents is noteworthy. This aims to provide users with a knowledgeable assistant to specify objectives, share context, review plans, and approve suggestions. This human in the loop approach appears designed to maintain control while leveraging the automation capabilities of the AI agents. The emphasis on handling complex legacy applications, including mainframes, signals an ambition to address the most challenging migration scenarios, and builds on the previous efforts with the M2 service.

Looking Ahead

Based on what I am observing, AWS Transform could represent a significant shift in the cloud migration landscape if the claimed results are consistently achieved in real world deployments. I recently attended an AWS Analyst conference where the focus was FSI clients talking about their AWS relationships.  The key takeaway was that AWS has cracked FSI and is therefore well placed to target the installed base for the largest VMware and Mainframe deployments with this new AI-driven approach.

The key trend that I am going to be looking out for is the actual adoption rate and the tangible outcomes reported by a broader set of customers beyond the initial preview users. AWS has shared examples publicly of clients that have migrated, we just need to see this list expand regularly.

One key area to watch will be how well AWS Transform integrates with existing migration tools and methodologies. Furthermore, the competitive response from other cloud providers and migration specialists will be crucial. Will we see a wave of AI powered migration services emerging? Based on my analysis of the market, my perspective is that the success of AWS Transform will likely hinge on its ability to handle the nuances and complexities of diverse enterprise environments and to build trust in the reliability and accuracy of its AI agents. Going forward I am going to be closely monitoring how the company performs on delivering consistent results and expanding the capabilities of the Transform agents to cover a wider range of workloads and migration scenarios. HyperFRAME will be tracking how the company does in future quarters in terms of customer adoption and reported migration acceleration metrics.
