Intel reported second quarter 2026 revenue of $16.1 billion, up 25% year over year and the company's strongest growth rate in more than fifteen years. Revenue, gross margin, and EPS all cleared the high end of guidance, marking a seventh consecutive quarter of doing so. Data Center and AI revenue grew 59%, Intel Foundry revenue rose 31% with 18A-P entering risk production, and management raised 2026 capital spending plans above $20 billion on stronger customer demand signals.

Analyst Take

Seven consecutive quarters of beating guidance can be assessed as an operating model instead of asking "is it a fluke?" each quarter. Intel's Q2 print is the strongest evidence yet that the "New Intel" restructuring, faster decisions, tighter customer feedback loops, sharper accountability, is showing up in the numbers rather than remaining a talking point on an earnings call. Revenue growth accelerating to 25%, gross margin clearing guidance by nearly three points, and 18A output beating internal targets; all suggest a company executing, versus the merely recovering narrative of previous years.

All great, but a hard question needs to be asked. To what degree is Intel executing versus its boat being lifted by the ongoing rising tide of a booming semiconductor market in the AI age. Intel has unique positioning both in sovereign and foundry, to what degree is it leveraging those in the window available to it? Most of this quarter's upside is demand-pull, not share-gain. Intel's own commentary points to AI infrastructure demand outstripping supply broadly, a rising tide TSMC, AMD, and Qualcomm are all describing this earnings season too. It is also worth noting that Intel's "only company that can do it all" framing must be taken in the context of NVIDIA's 2025 $5 billion equity investment in Intel. NVIDIA is now simultaneously a strategic partner and, through Intel's own compute ambitions, a long-term competitor. That has to complicate the tidy full-stack narrative management wants investors to take at face value. Intel's real test isn't whether AI demand exists, it clearly does, but (among other things) whether Intel Foundry converts that demand into an external customer roster large enough to matter. Through that lens, Q2's $293 million in external foundry revenue, while certainly progress, is not yet proof.

What The Numbers Mean

The headline growth obscures a more interesting supply story. Management described Q2 output as exceeding expectations set ninety days earlier across major nodes, and confirmed that Q3 quarter-to-date 18A yields are already trending ahead of the targets set back in March. That is not simply strong demand landing on a fixed base, it is a foundry organization hitting operational marks it set for itself and then beating them. It must be said, that is a welcome change in an area that historically has not been Intel's strong suit. Advanced packaging tells a similar story: management pointed to a growing EMIB-T backlog with yield and reliability tracking on plan. Those results position the business to ramp into high-volume, high-quality output in support of customer commitments in 2027.

The CPU franchise is quietly carrying more of the strategic weight than the segment revenue line suggests. Management framed the priority as increasing CPU density and reinforcing the franchise's role as AI workloads move from training to inference and now toward agentic and multi-agent systems. The latter a progression that keeps CPUs relevant even as GPU attach rates climb. Xeon 6 is now one of the fastest-ramping products in Intel's history, and 18A has reached full scale with more than 400 designs for Series 3 spanning consumer and commercial. That is a broader design-win base than the DCAI revenue growth alone conveys, and it is the piece of the CPU story most likely to get lost next to the foundry headlines.

The ASIC business adds a second, similarly under-discussed data point. Management now frames the addressable market at $100 billion and expects to capture a meaningful share of it given Intel's IP portfolio. That claim goes well beyond the already-strong nearly 3x revenue growth cited in this quarter's numbers. Growth in this line is explicitly tied to a stated expansion path, from networking silicon, where Intel's purpose-built portfolio started, into compute, and eventually into accelerators. Looking across this roadmap positions ASICs as a multi-year growth vector rather than a one-quarter pop. Separately, on the call, the CFO described the compute mix in servers as moving toward parity between CPUs and GPUs, without attaching a specific figure to it, a directional comment we are hearing from every major player in the space.

Management also described the industry as facing one of the most severe supply constraints in its history across leading-edge logic wafers, memory, and substrates. Shortages in all of these areas were stated as persisting for the foreseeable future rather than easing by next quarter. That backdrop is what makes the capital spending increase, raised above $20 billion for 2026 with 2027 described as significantly higher, read as a company choosing to build ahead of confirmed demand rather than react to it after the fact. That is a significant posture shift from the more capital-disciplined tone of recent years. Management also disclosed ten long-term supply agreements now in place with server CPU customers, some with pricing locked in and others tied to committed volume, a mechanism increasingly common in memory but new to Intel's CPU business. That suggests Intel is trying to lock in the current AI-driven pricing environment before it potentially normalizes, defensible if supply constraints persist into 2027 as guided, less defensible if the AI capex cycle cools faster than expected.

The GAAP loss, driven almost entirely by the escrowed-shares mark-to-market tied to the CHIPS warrant structure, is a reminder that the U.S. government's equity position in Intel now runs directly through the income statement each quarter. That is not a one-time item to look past this quarter and forget. It is a recurring feature of Intel's capital structure tied to the CHIPS Act Secure Enclave agreement, and it will keep adding GAAP volatility that has nothing to do with operations for as long as shares remain in escrow.

Market Analysis

Intel's print lands in the middle of a strong same-quarter run across the semiconductor complex. TSMC, whose results are the cleanest read on foundry-wide demand, posted Q2 2026 revenue of $40.2 billion, up 33.7% year over year, with gross margin at 67.7%. TSMC paired that print with an additional $100 billion commitment to its Arizona buildout, on top of prior pledges. That U.S. domestic commitment raises the stakes for Intel Foundry's own domestic manufacturing pitch to U.S. customers and policymakers who increasingly have a credible, well-capitalized alternative building onshore capacity as well. Intel's own capex framing invites a direct comparison here: management noted that Intel's cumulative U.S. tooling and cleanroom investment since 2021 is approaching $100 billion, more than any other semiconductor company over that stretch. The claim holds on its literal terms, this is a U.S.-only figure, but it thins out considerably once TSMC's global buildout (Arizona, Japan, and continued expansion at home combined) is counted rather than just its U.S. slice. The TSMC margin gap alone, roughly 26 points above Intel Foundry's non-GAAP profile, is a reminder that scale and yield maturity still separate the two well before Intel earns a place as a genuine alternative for leading-edge external customers.

AMD has not yet reported its Q2 2026 quarter, results are due August 4, but guided to roughly $11.2 billion in revenue, up approximately 46% year over year, the fastest guided growth rate of any major peer this cycle, with non-GAAP gross margin near 56%. If AMD hits that guide, its growth rate would still outpace Intel's Total Intel Products growth of 28%, even as Intel's DCAI segment posted the faster year over year growth of the two companies' most recent server results.

On the competitive question analysts actually asked, Morgan Stanley's Joe Moore pressed management directly on server share versus AMD and Arm. Lip-Bu Tan's answer leaned on the product roadmap, Clearwater Forest, Diamond Rapids, and Coral Rapids, and claimed Intel is narrowing the single-thread and multi-thread performance gap that has defined AMD's server share gains in recent years. More striking was how he described Arm: not as a rival to be dislodged, but as a partner for both foundry and IP. That is a comfortable position when Arm needs manufacturing capacity, and a considerably less comfortable one when Arm-based designs are what is displacing x86 in the server racks Intel is trying to defend.

Qualcomm's most recent print, fiscal Q2 2026, reported in April, showed revenue down 3% year over year to $10.6 billion, underscoring that Intel's CCPG strength this quarter runs counter to softness elsewhere in client and mobile silicon. Qualcomm's fiscal Q3 print, due July 29, just six days after Intel's release, should clarify whether that softness is company specific or a broader signal about the PC and handset cycle Intel itself is already calling sub-seasonal for the back half of the year.

Looking Ahead

Based on what we are observing, the more consequential storyline for Q3 is not the revenue guide itself, but whether Intel's external foundry revenue can move meaningfully past the $293 million logged this quarter. Management's language, that 18A yields are already ahead of the targets set in March, gives Intel a credible technical case. That said, a credible process and a signed marquee customer remain two different things. The nearer-term checkpoints are worth tracking too: Intel has 14A reaching PDK 0.9 in October, with risk production for internal products slated for the second half of 2027, ahead of the fully-committed 2028 high-volume ramp. Each of those is a real gate rather than just a date on a slide, and a slip at PDK 0.9 would be the first sign this quarter's execution streak has limits. Management's own commentary now stretches the double-digit server CPU unit growth outlook through 2028 as well, which lines up suspiciously well with that same 14A high-volume ramp commitment. Whether that is coordinated long-term planning or convenient framing is something we will be testing against actual execution as 2027 unfolds.

We will also be watching:

  • Whether the ten long-term server CPU agreements convert into disclosed, named commitments rather than remaining aggregate figures, since naming rights are typically what shifts sentiment on Foundry's viability, and,
  • Whether the expanded Google Cloud collaboration, framed internally as embracing an "AI-first" mentality across operations, shows up as measurable execution speed rather than remaining an internal transformation talking point.

Qualcomm's July 29 print and AMD's August 4 print will both land within two weeks of Intel's release and should offer the cleanest read yet on whether AI-driven demand is broadening across the industry or moving disproportionately in Intel's favor this cycle.
